The village is located at an altitude of approximately 800 meters, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, and its origins date back to 850 BC, during the occupation by the Turduli. Later, it was crossed by the Roman road that connected Emerita to Braga. Traces of sections of the Roman road and forum are still visible. Located by the beach, the Melides Lagoon spreads inland through several miles of rice fields and has a sand cliff to the north. It is a quiet and peaceful place, located about 200 metres away from the shoreline. Several species of birds inhabit it, namely the little egret, the purple heron and the sandwich tern. There is a camping nearby.

Situated at an altitude of 474 meters, Évora Monte Castle offers a beautiful view of the Alentejo plains. To the north, one can glimpse the Serra de São Mamede. To the south, the landscape is dominated by the houses of Évora and the Serra de Mendro. Further east, the verdant eucalyptus forest of Serra da Ossa paints the Alentejo landscape.
