Celorico da Beira
Located in Serra da Estrela mountain massif, the village of Celorico da Beira is divided into two markedly distinct zones: the Serra, with a part integrated in the more wild Serra da Estrela Natural Park; and the Vale area, which encompasses a large area along the Mondego river, where the climate is milder and the land is more fertile. The human presence, according to some authors, in this territory dates back to the turduli around the year 500 BC. However, it was the presence of the Romans that left more traces in the area, as some road sections, with emphasis on the Roman sidewalk of Celorico da Beira and the Estrada dos Almocreves road. In the middle ages the village had a decisive role in the fights against the Castilian and Muslim assaults. Later, during the French invasions, Celorico reaffirmed its strategic importance and was used as the allies and French headquarters. Celorico da Beira is a primarily rural municipality, being pastoralism and the production of sheep's cheese its main economic activities. This cheese is, incidentally, one of the ex-libris of the region, reason why the county is known as the capital of the Serra da Estrela cheese. Make sure to also taste the traditional sausages, specially the hams.
