One of the areas you must not loose to go shopping is right at the heart of town, where the old market of Santana rises, now recovered, and where good commerce, modern esplanades and cultural spaces are condensed.Also in Rodrigues Lobo Square and at the 5 de Outubro Plaza, which communicate between them, the visitor will find esplanades and small commerce, under the centenary arcades.

The Barcelos Weekly Fair takes place every Thursday, where you can find a variety of handcrafted products, arts and crafts, such as typical Barcelos pottery, roosters, linens and embroidery, among others.

A very busy fair, one of the best known in the northern region, which is already part of the weekly routines of people from the Aveiro district and the cities of Porto and Gaia.

It is known locally as "praça" (square) and is a building, inaugurated in 1947, that occupies a vast area, very close to the city center. There you can find fresh products such as fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, bread, and food establishments. The headquarters of the Association of Portuguese Wine Municipalities is located in its tower, and on one of its sides there is a very pleasant spot, the Duck Pond.

Inaugurated in 1930, it was built to replace another market, demolished in 1876. Highlights include the interior tile panels by the Portuguese painter Pedro Pinto, dated 1929, and, at the north entrance, two panels by Rosa Rodrigues, dated 1944.

Inaugurado em 1940, o Mercado dos Lavradores, no centro do Funchal, foi erigido com o objectivo de ser o grande polo abastecedor da cidade. Projeto da autoria de Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), apresenta grandes painéis de azulejos da Faiança Batisttini de Maria de Portugal. Atualmente, este espaço ainda exerce as funções para as quais foi criado, tornando-se num ponto de encontro entre locais e turistas, num ambiente onde se misturam cores, sons, cheiros e gentes diversas.
