Castro Marim
The municipality of Castro Marim is characterized by extensive mountains, where wild flowers abound, and the orchards and vegetable gardens on the banks of the Guadiana river, which mark the border with Ayamonte. The county is divided into four parishes: Azinhal, Odeleite and Castro Marim in the interior and Altura in the middle of the Algarve coast, which has been going through a progressive tourism development. It is worth to enjoy the mild temperature, the sun and the sea in the best local beaches, especially the Verde, do Cabeço and da Alagoa beaches (Altura). And for nature lovers, the Natural Reserve of Sapal de Castro Marim offers the possibility to observe the rich and diverse flora and fauna, where numerous birds, salinas, canals, ponds and estuaries paint the horizon into a fine mosaic that extends up to Ayamonte's mouth. In a more cultural aspect, it is compulsory to visit Castro Marim castle and the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum. From the top of São Sebastião's fort, that stretches through the horizon, you will have a privileged view of the village. The summer in this region, as it happens in most municipalities in the country, is the traditional pilgrimage season. The Festa da Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, which is held for five days, mobilizes the entire population. The most important day of this festivity is August 15th. Castro Marim then gets filled up with history, especially in the celebration and re-creation of the medieval days, an event that takes annually place in late August and offers to all visitors street spectacles, animated banquets with live music, crafts and lots of fun. When it comes to the pleasures of the table, we can state that the local cuisine is very varied, but the specialty is undoubtedly the grilled fish, such as bass, bream, shrimp and catfish. The sweets are the irresistible queijadas de amêndoa (sweets made with almonds and cheese) and bolo de massa com canela do Azinhal (cake made with bread dough and Azinhal cinnamon).
