Fornos de Algodres

Discover the charms, the hospitality of its approximately 1700 inhabitants and, of course, the Queijo da Serra of this village at the foot of Serra da Estrela mountains, in Guarda district. Fornos de Algodres is a land of wide horizons and ancient history. Extend the look to Fraga da Pena and Castro de Santiago, da Serra, da Esgalhada up to the Serra da Estrela mountain range, and let yourself be enchanted by the natural beauties of this region. Witness the richness of its archaeological and architectural heritage with a visit to the dolmens, camps and necropolises, traces of other civilizations that once occupied the territory. Walk through the sidewalk and the Roman bridges, get to know the secular churches and chapels, the pillories, the palaces and the manors. Be sure to visit the cheese-making shops where the delicious Queijo da Serra, an ex-libris not only of Fornos de Algodres, but of the entire region, is produced. And by the way, taste it, of course, preferably accompanied by homemade rye bread, produced from cereals foddered in the region's mills and baked in ovens in various existing community civil parishes, or try the traditional cured meats of the region: black pudding, sausages, ham ... The goat or lamb roasted in the oven, the batatas de caçoila à moda de Fornos (mashed potatoes with tomato sauce), the peixes do rio (river fishes), the bacalhau à lagareiro (codfish cooked in the oven with a milk sauce and served with the typical batatas a murro - crushed potatoes cooked in the oven with olive oil and rosemary) or the migas com feijão-frade (dish made with leftover bread and black-eyed peas) are some of the typical dishes for which you can and should opt. Always accompanied by a good Dão wine, of course! If you are greedy, then make sure to try the arroz doce (rice pudding), the leite-creme (custard cream) and the requeijão com doce de abóbora ou mel (curd cheese with pumpkin jam or honey). Regional jeropiga (a sweet wine) and brandy are the ideal accompaniment. A true feast of smells and flavors! As a souvenir you can purchase one of the various products of the local crafts, from pottery to painting, lace and embroidery, tinsmith and basketry, or the traditional clogs produced directly in the village.
