Gouveia

Gouveia is located on the western slope of the Serra da Estrela mountains, offering fantastic views over the Mondego valley. It is one of the almost unavoidable places for those making excursions to the famous ski resorts of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, one of the biggest points of attraction in the region. Its foundation date is unknown. It is only sure that it is earlier than the Roman domain of the Iberian Peninsula. Some authors believe that it has been populated by the turduli in 580 BC and later also by Portuguese/Romans. Gouveia was integrated into Christian territory in 1055-1056 and ascended to the category of city in 1987. The city is characterized by its neighborhoods, which denote its history and tradition. We recommend a stroll through the Bairro do Castelo (Castle District), considered Gouveia's birthplace, the Bairro da Biqueira neighborhood, where the Jewish community resided in the 14th century, the Bairro do Toural neighborhood, with its Manueline houses, and the Bairro do Outeiro neighborhood. The gastronomic reference in the region could not fail to be the famous Queijo da Serra accompanied by the rye bread! Make also sure to try the sausages, the sopa de moiros, the caldo de castanhas (chestnut soup), the cabrito assado (roast kid), the alambicada de borrego (typical kid stew), the feijocas à pastor (stew made with beans and different kinds of meats and sausages), the arroz de carqueja (pork ribs rice) and the bola de carne (kind of bread with ham, bacon and chorizo). Finally, indulge in the doce de castanha (chestnut sweet), leite-creme (custard-cream), doce de abóbora (pumpkin jam) and the famous arroz doce (rice pudding) made with sheep's milk.
