Mangualde

Elevated to the category of city in 1986, Mangualde integrates Viseu district and is composed of nineteen parishes. The passage of river Dão, to the north, as well as the Mondego river, to the south, characterizes both the landscape and the soils quality, which have proven to be fertile since ancient times. This is specially the case for the wine making, as Mangualde is one of the largest Dão doc wine producers. There are traces in several parishes, even today, of the passage of ancient civilizations. Full of churches, the town is famous for several factors. Many visitors flock here for the good gastronomy, namely the lamb, the torresmos (pork rinds) and febras à moda de Mangualde (Mangualde-style pork steaks), or the arroz de entrecosto em vinhas de alhos (ribs rice with a wine and garlic sauce), the carolos (maize loafs with sausages), without forgetting the sausages and, above all, the Serra cheese. The pastéis de feijão (sweet bean pies) have a lot of demand, as well as the papas doces à moda da Beira (sweet porridge) or the arroz doce (rice pudding). No less known are the traditional arts. Black clay and ceramic objects and also the Bordados de Tibaldinho (Tibaldinho embroidery) are easy to find. These are made since 1810 by the Tibaldinho embroiderers and adorn windows and tables of many Portuguese homes.
