Marco de Canaveses

Marco de Canaveses, located in northwestern Portugal, is bordered by two of Portugal's most important rivers: the Douro and the Tâmega. The region boasts important prehistoric remains in the Aboboreira mountain range, and Roman remains in Tongóbriga: a Roman city whose remains include the baths, the forum, residential areas, and a necropolis. Watersports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, and canoeing at the Carrapatelo and Torrão reservoirs, nestled in a breathtaking landscape with the Douro slopes dotted with imposing manor houses. Culinary highlights include lamprey, roast kid with oven-baked rice, sponge cake, and "cavacas" (a type of Portuguese sweet), as well as vinho verde (a type of Portuguese wine). Regional crafts include copperware, basketwork, straw hats, lace, and embroidery.
