Ponta do Sol

The municipality of Ponta do Sol is located 18 kilometers from Funchal, on the south coast of Madeira Island. It is said that the name was given to it, in 1420, by João Gonçalves Zarco when he, on a reconnaissance trip along the island's coast, reached a point that went into the sea and from which he could see a rock that seemed to reflect the sun's rays. Today, it lives from agriculture (sugar cane, horticulture, floriculture and bananas) and also from tourism, enhanced by its rich heritage, natural beauty, subtropical climate and excellent bathing conditions. In gastronomy, be sure to try the kebab on a bay skewer, the fish stew, or the tuna steaks and, in terms of crafts, pay attention to the patchwork tapestries, canvases, Madeira embroidery, cooperage and wicker works of art.
