Floresta Laurissilva

A forest whose origins date back to the Tertiary period and which once extended across vast regions of the European continent. Currently, it is confined to some archipelagos in the North Atlantic, with a particular concentration in Madeira, where it is currently considered the largest continuous area of this type of forest in the world. It is important both for its representativeness in terms of the diversity of flora and fauna species and its state of conservation. It was classified as a UNESCO Natural Heritage site in 1999. In 2010, it was classified as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal.
