Alpiarça
Alpiarça is a Ribatejo municipality of Santarém's district and has only one parish with headquarters in the village of Alpiarça. Its geographic situation, on the left bank of the Tagus, favored human occupation since the Lower Paleolithic up to the Roman period. Some milestones found in the region attest to the Roman presence in Alpiarça. Until 1836 it was part of the municipality of Santarém and, subsequently, of Almeirim. In 1906, Alpiarça municipality was elevated to the condition of town and became the county head. The main point of interest is the Casa Museu dos Patudos (Patudos House-Museum), a space in honour of José de Mascarenhas Relvas (1858-1929), a politician, man of letters, musician and collector of art, among other interests that made him create this space of great richness and beauty. It presents a collection of heterogeneous art: paintings, furniture, faience, porcelain, tapestries and bronzes. In terms of gastronomy, the special emphasis goes to the Carneiro à Moda de Alpiarça (Alpiarça style mutton dish) and the Miga Fervida (dish made with leftover bread). The typical sweets are the Broas de Alpiarça (kind of sweets with anise), the Quadradinhos de Alpiarça (kind of sweets made with eggs, cinnamon and lemon) and Pão-de-ló de Alpiarça (kind of sponge cake).
