Arronches

Situated in the alto Alentejo, the municipality of Arronches is integrated in Portalegre's district. From the three parishes belonging to the municipality, two of them - Esperança and Mosteiros, are part of the protected area of Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Bathed by the river Caia, water plays a fundamental role in the region and especially in the agriculture sector, which has the greatest expressiveness in the municipality. Arronches is commonly known as "lands of pigs" because, according to a legend, the people in the morning, opened the pigsties for their pigs to go to the field. At dusk, the animals returned to eat and sleep. One of the most remarkable collections of rock paintings of the country can be found at Esperança parish. There are shelters of paintings at Serra dos Louções and Serra da Cabaça. In the mid 80s', the parish was named Portuguese Rupestral Art Capital. In gastronomy the typical Alentejo dishes could not be missing: sausages, tomato and cação (kind of fish) soups, açordas (bread dish), migas (dish made with leftover bread) with potatoes and spare ribs, lamb stew, presinha do alguidar (dish made with pork meat, sausages and bread), among other well appreciated delicacies. The slaughter of the pig stands out among the various traditions of this land. This day is celebrated with all due pomp and circumstance, because the animal is raised for this sole purpose.
