Entroncamento

Entroncamento was born due to the creation of a railway station in 1864. As its name indicates, "rail junction", here was the crossing area of the northern and eastern railway lines. The number of passengers was huge and the location developed from then on. After the growth of a small center, constituted mainly of rail operators, Entroncamento became a parish in 1926, a county seat in 1945 and a city in 1991. Be sure to visit the Igreja Matriz (mother church), the chapel of São João Baptista, the Chafariz das Vaginhas fountain, and the Locomotive 094, that was manufactured in 1929 in Germany and is now at Largo do Centro de Convívio. Watch out the typical neighborhoods: Bairro da Estação, Bairro do Boneco, Bairro da Vila Verde, Bairro Camões and Bairro da Liberdade. The Museu Nacional Ferroviário (National Railway Museum) and the Rotunda das Locomotivas (Roundabout of Locomotives) are worth an attentive visit and the Parque do Bonito park invites to some nice walks. The typical crafts include tiled and textile paintings, embroidery, paintings on glass and porcelain, wicker baskets, steel airplanes and decorative arts. The characteristic cuisine brings together flavors from various regions of the country. Try the cod in the oven, the duck with rice, the meat pies, the açordas (kind of mash made with old bread), the grilled fish, the tigeladas (sweets made with eggs, lemon and cinnamon), the arroz doce (rice pudding) and the pão-de-ló (sponge cake).
