This mountain range is bordered to the north by the transition area to the Beja clay and pre-clay region, to the east by the Guadiana River, to the west by the Serra de Monchique, and to the south by the Barrocal Algarvio. It is therefore located in the central part of the Algarve, belonging to the Old Massif, in southern Portugal. The maximum altitude is 577 meters, reached at Pico do Mu, and its vegetation has characteristics typical of the Algarve region. It has very low population density, with a resident population of approximately 70,000.

The museum is housed in a building representative of late 19th-century bourgeois architecture. The exhibits include a display of traditional Algarve costumes from the 19th and 20th centuries and a collection of popular religious sculptures. Around twenty antique Algarve vehicles are on display on the farm's premises. There is also an exhibition of harnesses and agricultural implements and an area dedicated to cork.

Here, at the Mesquita site, José Vicente de Brito, a São Paulo poet, was born and lived. In his memory, a verse of his was placed in Poço Velho. The site honors the poet, who died in 1957.
