Occupying a total area of 35 hectares, the Biological Park of Vila Nova de Gaia aims to be a center for environmental education, with a pedagogical purpose that involves understanding the landscape of the region and the contrast between the agroforestry landscape and the urban surroundings. Thus, the visitor can contact with hundreds of animal and plant species in the wild. It also has a recovery center for animals found injured or held in captivity illegally, and a plant nursery.

Igreja Matriz de Albufeira

Built in the late 18th century, the Igreja Matriz has an imposing bell tower. On the main altar there is a valuable image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição from the 18th century and an altarpiece painted by the Albufeira artist Samora Barros. On the side altars and in the sacristy there are images from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Occupied by the Romans in the mid-2nd century, it was transformed into a political and administrative center, conquered by the Moors in 713 and taken over by the Portuguese crown in 1248. The castle was restored by Dom Dinis. The walls are made of rammed earth with battlements and a walkway that communicates with the watchtower. Traces of sections of the wall, the entrance turret and, inside, the ruins of a church with Gothic and Manueline traces remain.

Wooden altarpiece, unique in the Algarve, with images from the 17th and 18th centuries. There is an image of the mutilated Senhora da Piedade. Inside is the Museum of Sacred Art of Albufeira.

Ancient Benedictine monastery, whose present ensemble dates from the XVIII century. The monastery has four cloisters and the most important is decorated with azulejos and a granite fountain at the centre. The church has beautiful golden woodcarving works.
