A municipal library with a vast historic collection.

The municipal library, placed at the Braamcamp Freire palace, is one of the largest in the country, with a bibliographic collection of more than 70000 works of art. One of the bibliographic founds with great importance is the Braamcamp Freire library, with acquisitions and offers, manuscripts, the archive of the house itself, old volumes and XIV/XV centuries manuscripts of great historic value, first editions and precious books.

Modern equipement divided in four floors. Besides the traditional area of books, papers and magazines, the library has a multi functions room for 98 people, a computers room, a multimedia service, a space for the children and the teenagers and spaces for exhibitions, debates and cinema.

The library is situated at the Torreão das Portas da Cidade. Non-members can look up, read or request library material and/or use the internet. The library also provides entertainment activities and organizes exhibitions on various themes.
