Building dated from the end of the XVIII century, the former residence of the Carvalhal Counts. The seven wicker balconies in forged iron and the portal sided by two iron lanterns are worthy of notice. It worked as a hotel, a college and international club and is now the property of the City Council and headquarters of Regional Archive of Madeira, the Municipal Library, the Museum and the Municipal aquarium of Funchal.

This monument, founded in the 14th century, of religious character is distinguished primarily by its facade, to the extent that contained 2 bell towers and a terrace on the side. Comprises chorus, nave, chancel, baptismal Chapel, Sunday school room, Bell House, City Hall, vestry and meeting room. These are the remains of an ancient Roman castle, built on a site overlooking the city. Of the original medieval fortress, only a few sections of the wall remain, some integrated into other buildings and not always visible.
