Vila Nova de Famalicão

The Romanic church was built on the 12th century even though there are some doubts about the fact that this church used to be part of the Benedictine Convent, founded by S. Frutuoso on the 6th century. It stands out the doorway with two archivolts deeply decorated and the occidental doorway, very simple with the tympanum with a cross and laces, inspired on the bracarense (from Braga) art from the end of the 12th centuries.

This church has one only nave with a high choir, main chapel and lateral chapel. It was integrated on a Franciscan Monastery from which it is kept the porch with three arches. The portico holds the Renaissance outline as well as the funerary chapel from D. Francisco Coutinho. On the inside stands out the fifteen hundreds paintings and the ceiling covered with coffers. Next to the main chapel there is a defensive tower.

São João de Alporão church is a temple from the 12th century and it appeared under the political – religious fight contexts during the Christian Reconquest. This is a singular temple by the way it associates the Gothic style and the Romanic style. On the interior it stands out the fourteen hundreds tombstone from Dom Duarte de Menezes. Nowadays the church is open to the public as a Museum for Temporary Exhibitions.

Although the conventual part is in ruins, the church, rebuilt in the 18th century, presents a harmonious façade dominated by five sculptures representing the four evangelists and Saint Louis. Inside, the gilded altarpiece and the Joanine sacristy stand out with paneled and painted ceilings, and walls covered in historic tiles. The cloister is made up of seven sections of arcades with Tuscan columns. It is currently adapted as a guesthouse.

In this monument we stand out its crenel towers, the gallery with ten down arches above Toscan small columns and doors and windows with frames from the fifteen hundreds. In 2001 it suffered a partial rock fall from the vast arcade from the second floor from the main façade.

In this solar from the XVII century we have to stand out the existence of a distinct body integrated on the building and parallel to the frontage with open balconies supported by classic columns with a Coat of Arms on the entrance. The sixteen hundreds elements have to be mentioned, such as the porch with columns with simple capital and architrave decorated with triglyph, a door with a straight arch topped by a disrupted pediment decorated with volutes and cannon gargoyles.

This baroque manor house is dated from the XVIII century and it has Coat of Arms. On the first floor, its granite balcony with iron railings, can be stand out. It also possesses two other floors which were built afterwards. It has an external stone stair from which one can enter to the residence on the first floor and it is located in one of the lateral façades.
