Arcos de Valdevez

Dated from the 1647 it is an André Soares oeuvre. This is a vast construction with one only nave and main chapel both filled in golden carving. The bell ringer tower was constructed between 1724 and 1727 by Master Domingos Matias and afterwards the main chapel was extended in 1746. It stands out the main altarpiece from the main chapel because it is a fine example from the late Mannerist phase, not only due to its conception, but also due to its decoration.

Located practically on one of the banks of the Tagus River, the Parish Church of Valada is very old, probably dating back to 1211. It has undergone several renovations over the years, the last of which took place at the beginning of the 20th century. The façade is of Mannerist religious architecture, with an angular gable and a bell tower. Inside, the 16th-century baptismal font stands out, without a shaft or base, while the nave walls have 19th-century patterned tiles.

This church is already mentioned in documents dating from 1220, as an integral part of the patronage of the Monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro. However, the current building has features of later Gothic influence, even though Romanesque construction was used. The chapel was probably built in the 13th century, when King Mendo de Sousa moved to Vila Verde. Today, evidence of frescoes by Mestre Arnaus can still be seen in the chancel, as weel as the plasterwork decorated with paintings in the nave.

Alcácer do Sal

A castle of Muslim construction whose occupation dates back to the 6th century BC. Definitely conquered by the Portuguese crown in 1217, it lost its military function in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the Carmelite Order of Aracoelli founded its convent there, remaining until 1834. Currently, it is possible to observe ruins of the castle, the Aracoelli convent, the 13th-century church of Santa Maria, remains of the town and various dwellings, and the Archaeological Crypt on the lower floor of the Pousada (inn).

The Gold Museum is housed in a goldsmith's workshop at Casa de Alfena (now a rural tourism accommodation unit) and is part of a group of workshops dating back to the 18th century. This space aims to showcase the identity of a community linked to gold work since ancient times. The museum is the result of the efforts of a goldsmith from Travassos, Francisco de Carvalho e Sousa, who, over fifty years of activity, collected gold objects, utensils, and furniture, now exhibited here.

Dating back to the late neolithic, the villag has several archaeological vestiges of different cultures and civilizations, namely the menhirs, the biggest of which (four metres) is classed as a national monument. There is also the castro (a celtic village) of Carapito. The pillory (16th century, just after the charter) and the mother church also stand out. The village/parish is located on the left bank of the Tàvora river and reach its highest point, the Pisco Mountain, at an altitude of 986 metres. A special note to the local cheese.

This is the former home of writer José Maria Ferreira de Castro (1898-1974), author of books such as "A Selva", which describes the drama of emigrants and the exoticism of the Amazon jungle, and "Volta ao Mundo", a description of his almost two-year journey shortly before the Second World War. This building, dating from the mid-19th century, is now a museum that brings together the writer's books, manuscripts and personal objects, including the shoes and suitcase that accompanied him on this trip around the world.
