Lagoa municipality, located in the western Algarve, is today a popular tourist destination, whether for its natural landscape diversity, as well as for the harmony in the junction of antiquity with modernity. Bounded to the west by Arade river, it benefits to the south of an about 17 km long coastline, displaying picturesque and stunning beaches of fine sand and crystalline water. The main economic activity of the municipality is naturally linked to tourism, but fishing, wine culture and crafts, specially pottery, also constitute a source of wealth. It is also sought after as a golfing destination, in which one can find some of the most popular fields for the practice of this activity. The cultural and economic potential of the region is manifested in Fatacil, the largest annual craft show, which is held in August. Here you will find numerous exhibitors, businesses and artisans disclosing their handmade products, an event that also organizes numerous musical performances. And if you're looking for a souvenir of Lagoa, the miniatures of typical Algarve wagons and gaudy fishing boats are among the most elaborate and representative objects of the region, as well as the linen embroidery, tapestries and wool dolls. At the table, the grilled sardines, the fragrant fish or seafood cataplana (dish made in a traditional copper recipient), the papas de milho com berbigão (corn porridge with cockles) and the feijoada de buzinas (bean stew with horns) are the most appreciated delicacies of the local cuisine. And to accompany the main course there is nothing better than the famous Lagoa wine with aromas of wild berries. In desserts, the highlight goes to the traditional almond and fig sweets of the Algarve.
