Palace built by Councillor José Victorino Zuzarte Coelho da Silveira, with interior decoration highly sponsored by owner José Maria Silveira Menezes, in the second half of the 19th century. This castle was built on an ancient Lusitanian hill fort that the Romans fortified. The original castle's highlights include the citadel with its keep, the vaulted cistern, and two gates, the Porta dos Fogos and the Porta do Sol, which define the wall structure of the old town. The cistern is located near a section of the wall. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the tower served as the town hall. Noteworthy, in the Porta do Sol, is an 18th-century window dated 1642.

The São João Baptista fort, next to the recreational port of Machico, was built by order of the Governor of Madeira, Captain-General Duarte Sodré Pereira, in 1708. It is also called Forte do Desembarcadouro because the discoverers disembarked nearby the island, Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. It defended the bay of Machico, doing crossfire with the fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo. Inside there is a neo-Gothic chapel, dedicated to the saint after whom the fortress is named.
