Montalegre
Montalegre is located on the Barrosão plateau, bordered to the north by Galicia. The Barroso region is part of the Galaico-Duriense massif, framed by the Gerês, Larouco, Cabreira, Alturas (or Barroso), and Leiranco mountain ranges. It is also part of the so-called Terra Fria Transmontana (Cold Land), a region of climatic contrasts. The fact that it is part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, the only national park in the country, with its lagoons, waterfalls, and lush green spaces, gives it a unique charm. The region's cuisine is one of its hallmarks, with highlights including the Barroso smoked meats and the Barrosã beef. Be sure to try the mountain goat, the Cávado River trout stuffed with ham, the Barrosã steak, the Barrosã stew, the meat "folar", "sopa de pedra" (soup), and the pumpkin marmelade.
