Classified as a national monument, it is one of the ex-libris of the city and one of the most original examples of the Baroque style in Portugal, having been built at the behest of D. João de Mendonça, Bishop of Guarda, around 1720. It features five lakes on the main slope, where the water features stand out, while the intermediate one has the Lago das Coroas and the Stairs of the Apostles and Kings, where all the Portuguese monarchs are represented. On the upper deck is the Staircase of Moses.

The urban park of the Ul, green space occupying an area equivalent to 30 football fields, is a modern and functional place of walk and recreation of the inhabitants of São João da Madeira and its visitors. Located in the city centre, the Park was designed by architect Sidónio Pardal and is characterized by the surrounding walls in granite and by a tree-lined interior that meanders the river Ul. It is a large space that invites to long walks or strolls in family through the freshness of the river and dams that were built there.

The Teófilo Braga garden, paying homage to the poet, writer and teacher with the same name, is also known by Parada Garden for being the former yard of the quarter parade. The statue paying homage to the feminine popular rebellion of Maria da Fonte, placed in the garden in 1920, is the origin of its other name, besides Campo de Ourique for it is the only one in this area. At the beginning of the decade the garden was recovered, equipped with new fittings and keeping some patrimonial elements. It is a tree area with two lakes and a playground.

It was one of the first villages with register, dated from 1195. Located at the foot of the southerly ladder of Gardunha Sierra, it stands out for its architectonical patrimony: the Town house, pillory, mother-church (where is the reliquary of S. Vicente), Misericórdia church (with the sacra art museum), chapels of Santo António, S. Sebastião and S. Francisco and Nossa Senhora da Orada, Calvary, emblazoned houses, fountain, Town hall and Misericórdia Hospital. The strawy chairs, the patchwork-quilts, the linen towels and wood works are some examples of the local handicraft.

The village of Alvito da Beira is believed to be of Moorish origin. According to historians, it was the Arabs who introduced the first olive groves to the region. These reached such a size that by the early 20th century, there were 10 olive presses in the parish. Small walls were built to protect the olive trees, of which traces still remain. In terms of architectural heritage, the main church, cross, old fountain, Mó fountain, Dáspera fountain, and Sobrainho fountain stand out. Crafts include weaving, tinsmithing, hand-made shoemaking, and blacksmithing.

Built in the 1930’s, the name of this garden with romantic characteristics is due to the former owner of this area, the judge of the high court Cunha Thorel. It has interesting flower beds, lovely shades, and small corners giving you privacy and a great view of down town. The Torel garden also has an elegant gate, two lakes, one of them with an old spring, a statue representing the bust of the piano player Viana da Mota, card-tables and traces of what might have been, during the XVII and XVIII centuries, a magnificent farm.
