According to legend, the foundation of this castle began with a hillfort that allowed Viriato's companions to withstand a seven-year siege. Later, it also withstood Arab, Castilian, and French attacks. It is located amidst a rocky outcrop, at a strategic lookout point. Dom Afonso Henriques granted it a charter in 1174 and donated it to the Templars, who built the castle. Of the imposing medieval fortress, only the quadrangular Torre de Lucena and Torre do Pião remain.

Founded in 1540, this convent features of various eras. In this monument are the main façade, the taste, the filipino side, with its three-story portico, (being the last Baroque, with pediment crowned by the Royal shield). Currently, works here the Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.

With a great architectonical simplicity, the Almas chapel dates from the beginning of the XVIII, and was repaired and enlarged in 1801. In 1929, the façades were covered with azulejos, by Eduardo Leite, representing the life of São Francisco de Assis and of Santa Catarina. The main façade presents a glass window by the painter Amândio Silva. Inside, the panel painted by Joaquim Rafael, representing the Lord’s Ascension and the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas stand out.

A louça mais tradicional tem fundo branco e decoração a azul. Em Vestiande e em Alcobaça ainda se executam peças de cerâmica e azulejo mantendo o fabrico tradicional.
