The first stone of this building was laid on July 3, 1649, during the reign of King John IV. The new Monastery was built to house the body of Queen Saint Isabel and the Poor Clare nuns from the original Convent of Santa Clara, which was in an advanced state of disrepair. The church, with a single nave, consists of a choir and a chancel. 18th century work also known as Aqueduct of the convent, consisting of a long arched colonnades, today partially ruined. It is an artificial channel built from the convent of Santa Clara to the East and initially comprised of 999 arches. It has a wingspan and height arches backwards, with broken arches and upper rounded channel profile.

Old chapel of which only have one part of the wall edge of the chancel, where one can find a fresco of the 16th century. This painting, with approximately 1.5 square feet, represents the figure of Santa Luzia, with the Palm, a symbol of martyrdom, in the right hand and a tray with two eyes on her left hand.

A neoclassicist chapel, dating back to the 18th century, with a longitudinal plan and the interior decorated with neoclassicist retables. In 1956 the main façade was covered by white and blue tiles. On the left side we can see Saint Anthony and read and inscription that says: "Fábrica do Carvalhinho" (Carvalhinho Factory) and below "Capela de Santo António do Telheiro" (Chapel of Saint Anthony of Telheiro). On the right side we can see an image of Our Lady of Fátima and an inscription that reads: "Restored in the year 1956".

With a great architectonical simplicity, the Almas chapel dates from the beginning of the XVIII, and was repaired and enlarged in 1801. In 1929, the façades were covered with azulejos, by Eduardo Leite, representing the life of São Francisco de Assis and of Santa Catarina. The main façade presents a glass window by the painter Amândio Silva. Inside, the panel painted by Joaquim Rafael, representing the Lord’s Ascension and the image of Nossa Senhora das Almas stand out.
