Batalha

The municipality of Batalha belongs to the district of Leiria and is composed of four parishes. The maximum exponent of this municipality is the imposing monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória or monastery of Batalha, the name by which it is best known. This is undoubtedly one of the most striking examples of Portuguese Gothic style and some claim that it is one of the most beautiful churches in Europe of the late Middle Ages. The existence of this monument, considered a world heritage site by UNESCO, is at the origin of Batalha and was built by D. João I three years after the emblematic battle of Aljubarrota. It should also be noted that Batalha's occupation dates back to ancient times, as evidenced by traces found of the Prehistory. Besides the architectural heritage that is worth a visit, the municipality is also famous for its crafts, gastronomy and tourism, given that it is part of Leiria-Fátima Tourism region. The wickers (used for making baskets), weaving, pottery and porcelain tinsmiths and pyrotechnics are symbols of Batalha. The local flavors are based on the meat and codfish; the tachadéu (fried pork served in clay pot) and the blood sausage (of rice, blood or white) are served everywhere, such as the tibornada, a codfish dish. The typical sweets are the bolos de ferradura (sweets made with cinnamon and anise), cavacas do Reguengo do Fetal (sweets with an egg and lemon cover), bolos de palma, bolo de perna and pudim da Batalha (Batalha pudding). The Festa da Santíssima Trindade, festa da Senhora do Fetal and Feira dos Vinte are famous attractions.
