Fafe

The municipality of Fafe, located at baixo Minho region, still preserves some rurality marks. In fact, this territory has marks of a rural aristocracy that left a visible heritage all over the county, particularly in the coats of some manors. Going back in time, you can observe that ancient populations like the Romans or Lusitanians also helped to form the region's "shape". The landscape is diverse and varies between valleys with fertile soils and mountains more conducive to pastoralism. The Casa Municipal da Cultura deserves a visit from a cultural point of view. This renovated historic building hosts in our days, between exhibitions and cultural events, the Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades (Museum of Migrations and Communities) and the Museu da Imprensa de Fafe (Fafe Press Museum). Don't miss the opportunity to observe one of the symbols of the city, the monument to the "Justice of Fafe", that somehow characterizes the punisher character of the fafenses, summed up in the motto "Com Fafe ninguém fanfe" ("With Fafe no one "fanfe"" - justice will be made by the hands of the people). In relation to the natural heritage, the highlight goes to the refreshing albufeira of Queimadela, which is bathed by Vizela river and that has beautiful river beaches and suitable locations for water sports. In its vicinity there is the Aldeia do Pontido village. It was fully recovered and is an excellent choice for all those seeking tourism in rural areas. The Feiras Francas (Tax-free Fairs) in may, a tradition that dates back to the late 17th century, constitute the most important cultural tradition in the municipality, from which the maximum exponent is the municipal holiday of May 16th. In a more religious context, you can go to the Festa da Nossa Senhora de Antime, in July, that receives thousands of believers to take part in the procession in honor of the Patron Saint. The region is primarily famous for the tender and tasty roasted veal, served with vinho verde of the region. For a sweet finish there is nothing like a taste of Fornelos regional sweets.
