Tavira
The integration of Ria Formosa with the estuary of the river Gilão marks the landscape of Tavira. In addition to the Arabic influence recognized, its position made it an important point of passage of vessels carrying food (salted fish, dried fruits (figs and almonds), salt and wine). The importance of Tavira was growing until the 16th century also for being the nearest port to Africa, but in the following centuries, the economic activity of the municipality was slowing down, given the abandonment of the main commercial centers of Africa, the silting up of the River, the change of rich merchants for other cities and the increase in the tonnage of vessels. One of the activities that most designed the County was fishing for tuna, begun in 1732, and remained in force until the second half of the 20th century, when there was a move away from the shoals of tuna. This activity there are still traces how, for example, the arraial Ferreira Neto, a national monument. Currently, Tavira has full-blown for tourism and its beaches are the main attractions. Tourism in Ria Formosa is massive, but it's worth it to enjoy the tours to meet this natural setting of great beauty, elected as one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal. The built heritage is remarkable: account with 21 churches and six convents, besides archaeological remains strong, and walls, who joins the gastronomic heritage, which features fish and shellfish assiduously and diverse sweets.
