Macedo de Cavaleiros enjoys a remarkable natural heritage, with emphasis on the Paisagem Protegida da Albufeira do Azibo (protected landscape), a vast area covered by the Rede Natura 2000, the valleys of the river Sabor, the Serra da Nogueira or the Serra de Bornes, ideal places for hang gliding and paragliding. The reservoir created with the construction of Azibo dam has provided, among other tourist and biological values, conditions for non-motorized water sports with its two beaches, which have been awarded with the blue flag for 4 consecutive years. Hunting and fishing are attractive activities in this region, as well as the flora, which presents unique characteristics in the world by the occurrence of wild orchids, and also bird watching, thanks to its rich fauna. The seven archaeological fields and the set of monuments in the municipality are testimony to the ancient occupation of the region, which is inhabited since the stone age and which heritage has been gathered in the living Sala-Museu de Arqueologia (Room-Museum of Archaeology), installed in the Núcleo Central da Paisagem Protegida da Albufeira do Azibo. The pagan legends and folklore have a creased presence everywhere, preserved in the traditions of the Caretos, Pauliteiros, Latos, Bombos, bagpipes and the marching music. All of this together with the flavors of the region's gastronomy, which includes sausages, mushrooms, the casulas secas (dried bean pods), the excellent wine, the chestnuts, olive oil and a whole set of delicacies that will make you want to come back rapidly.
