Vinhais

Vinhais is a municipality in the region of Trás-os-Montes e is inserted into the Douro River basin, being traversed by the currents of Tuela and Rabaçal. With a very sharp relief and deep valleys, has altitudes between 300 and 1273 metres and has a continental climate sometimes extreme. The vegetation of the region is rich and diverse, with many native species, and the wildlife takes European significance given the existence of endangered species like the Iberian wolf, Golden Eagle or the white stork. Otters, bucks, deer, rabbits, hares, partridges and wild boars complete this biological scenario. The origins of Vineyards are situated before the Foundation of nationality, formerly called Póvoa Rich. There are traces of occupation, romanization and Protohistoric strong activity in the middle ages, as the show traces of the Castle. Happy-go-lucky spirit, the people of Vinhais have strong Pagan traditions represented in popular festivals that surprise outsiders, such as the boys ' Party or, millennial persistence Caretos of an old rite of puberty, or Ash Wednesday dedicated to the Devils. The gastronomy is undoubtedly the great attraction of the region, where the trout from the river Tuela, hunting and the famous Smokehouse, made famous in the Smokehouse Party which takes place in February. It is no mere chance that Vineyards bears the title of Capital of the Smokehouse.
