Alfândega da Fé
With the Serra de Bornes to the north, the Sabor River valley to the south, the Castro Vicente plateau to the east, and the Vilariça valley to the west, Alfândega da Fé is a region of contrasts. With altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,200 meters, the geography and landscape are a true synthesis of Trás-os-Montes: the mountains, the high plateaus, the deep, incised valleys of the rivers, and the open valleys. Although silkworm farming assumed particular importance in the 18th and 19th centuries, the municipality finds its greatest wealth in agriculture, with an emphasis on the production of olive oil, cherries, and almonds. The processing of these products also gives rise to other activities, such as the production of traditional sweets and liqueurs, as well as the region's typical smoked meats and cheese.
