Alfândega da Fé

Taking as a reference the Serra de Bornes to the north, the valley of the Sabor river to the south, Castro Vicente's plateau to the east and Vilariça's valley to the west, it is possible to understand that Alfândega da Fé is a region of contrasts. With altitudes alternating between 400 and 1200 meters, the geography and the landscape are a true synthesis of Trás-os-Montes: the mountains, the high-altitude plateaus, deep troughs and valleys of watercourses and open valley areas. The flora is well represented here, with the chestnut trees, oaks, olive trees, almond trees, cherry trees, orange trees and vines, in addition to the cereals such as rye, which was only recently cultivated in nearly thousand meters altitude. Although there are archaeological remains of a village of Castro origin, Alfândega da Fé finds its origins in the period of Muslim occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Here a fortress and settlement of its name "Alfandagh", which means hospice, inn or border was built, designating the tranquil resting place found by the Muslims. The conquest of the region by the Asturian neogodos must have added "Faith" to the original word. Although the culture of silkworms has assumed particular importance in the 18th and 19th centuries, the council finds its greatest wealth in agriculture, with emphasis on the production of olive oil, cherry and almond. The transformation of these products also gives rise, in addition to the typical smoked meat and cheese, to other activities such as the production of confectionery and traditional liquors. The cherry production has taken an important role in the municipality's tourism with the organization of the Feira da Cereja e dos Produtos Biológicos (Cherry and Organic Products Fair), having it earned the name of Cherry Capital of the Northeast Transmontano thanks to the local products quality.
