Murtosa
The municipality of Murtosa is located in the coastal region of Aveiro. Its geographical position kept it away from the major communication routes, being surrounded by Ria de Aveiro, the sea and the countryside. The landscape of Murtosa, markedly plane, is crossed by several channels of the so-called Ria (haff-delta) of Aveiro, specially the channel of Murtosa. The lagoon features, associated with the Atlantic influences, give it a unique landscaping with a great diversity of biotypes. The first references date back to the early 13th century, when some couples exploited marine salt under the rule of Vila Cova monastery. The county was the target of a rapid population growth from the mid-20th century, which has resulted in a great migratory flow to several countries, in particular, to Venezuela. This was mainly due to insufficient land for cultivation for such a growing population. Water plays a fundamental role in the lives of the inhabitants by providing the existence of activities which constitute the way of life of a significant part of the population, mainly dedicated to agriculture and fishing. We can still find, although in decline, methods used in the past, including harvesting of seaweed, an aquatic plant that after drought is used as a fertilizer and in the construction of typical boats – the moliceiros, the region's ex-libris. Murtosa has several monuments of patrimonial relevance, which constitute a precious booty in historical terms. The beaches are quite sought after, not only because of its intrinsic characteristics, but also due to the maintenance of an ancestral fishing gear, the forest sector (trawling). The gastronomy of the region is greatly appreciated, especially for lovers of good fish and shellfish. The caldeirada de enguias (eel stew) takes the honors.
