Castelo de Paiva

Castelo de Paiva is located in the Douro region, a river that makes these lands fertile, with agriculture being one of the most predominant activities. However, in recent years, industry has seen significant growth. In terms of heritage, there are several megalithic monuments throughout the municipality, as well as signs of Roman presence, such as the Boavista Memorial and the Pia dos Mouros, a Hispano-Roman tomb. Originally called simply Paiva, it was only a century and a half ago that it was renamed Castelo de Paiva. Castelo refers to the possible existence of a fortified settlement in the area, and Paiva refers to a river that flows into the Douro.
