By many considered as the tenth island due to the distance and difficult access from Ponta Delgada, Nordeste municipality is inhabited by about 5200 inhabitants in its 101.5 km2. Created in 1514, the municipality is composed of 9 parishes, including the picturesque Nordeste village. The name probably derives from the fact that it is located in the northeast of São Miguel island or because it is exposed to winds coming from that side. The Nordeste population mainly lives from the primary sector, in particular from agriculture and livestock. This aspect is easily observable for those visiting Nordeste: the cows find their pastureland in mountain and lush slopes in the municipality, in a scenario identical to that of the Alpine pastures in Switzerland. The road verges colored with hydrangeas and the whitewashed stream walls make up the rest of the picture in this mountainous area. Here lies the highest point on the island of São Miguel, Pico da Vara, with 1105 meters of altitude and a representative endemic flora typical from Macaronesia. Also the priolo, an endemic bird of this island, finds here its habitat. Nordeste is a place not to be missed by nature lovers. The breathtaking viewpoints, the Serra da Tronqueira, the parks, the Ribeira dos Caldeirões and the places conducive to hiking or outdoor activities are abundant. For the more sedentary ones, the center of the village with its Sete Arcos bridge serving as a calling card, is inviting to do some relaxed strolls.
