Situated on the North coast of the island of São Miguel, Ribeira Grande presents a relief dominated by volcanic massif of serra de Água de Pau, whose boiler is located in lagoa do Fogo. Its volcanic origin is manifested by the presence of fumaroles at Caldeira Velha and the Boilers of Ribeira Grande. The first inhabitants settled in the last quarter of the 15th century, the north face, crossed by the ribeira Grande, attracted by the designated geographical and natural conditions of the site. It is the third most populous municipality in the archipelago, having been elevated to the city June 29, 1981. There are several sites that deserve prominence in the municipality, namely, tea plantations Gorreana and Porto Formoso. At the factory of liquors of Eduardo Ferreira & Children are produced various types of liqueurs, particularly the passion fruit and the wine with the brand "Capote's wife". From April to June are the feasts of the Holy Spirit, the most traditional of the archipelago.
