Situated on the southern coast of the island of São Miguel, in the bottom of the main crater of serra de Água de Pau volcanic complex, Lagoa is one of the oldest São Miguel settlements. The name's origin derives from the fact that there once was a lagoon ("lagoa") in front of the present Church of Santa Cruz. The territory is marked, at its base, by the slopes of Fogo volcano (Maciço da serra de Água de Pau), and, to the west, by Picos volcanic complex. The occupation took place after the discovery of São Miguel island. The village grew to the west towards a nearby bay, where once the first fishing boats, so called Porto dos Carneiros, were housed. Some families, attracted by the farmland and by the existence of a watercourse, settled to the east of the current village of Lagoa. The lugar da Caloura, a port with a natural pool and multiple accesses to the sea by stairs, is considered to be the ex-libris of the municipality. The various viewpoints provide magnificent views and Chã da Macela forest park has adequate infrastructures for picnics and for children to play. Lagoa's ceramics factory produces pieces, which are hand painted by local artists. There are several places where you can taste the regional gastronomy. The lapas de molho Afonso (limpets with a special sauce) and caldeirada (a traditional fish stew) are specialties available in many restaurants. In what regards the sweets, you may want to taste the massa sovada (kind of sweet bread), the arroz doce (rice pudding) and the mal-assadas (fried sweets made with lemon and orange juice). Between June and September there are many religious and cultural festivals taking place all over the county.
