Penafiel

Penafiel is located in the heart of the Douro Litoral region, between the Tâmega and Sousa rivers. The city's historic center boasts a granite ensemble of noble houses, churches, and convents that are well worth a visit. The municipality is rich in historical and cultural monuments and mansions steeped in history: Casa do Murom, the refuge of the poet Alexandre Herculano, Casa do Seixo, and Quinta da Aveleda are just a few examples. The monuments that are part of the Romanesque Route of the Sousa Valley deserve close attention, and the São Vicente thermal baths are a must-see! Typical dishes include roast kid or lamb with oven-baked rice, along with "sopa seca", "sarrabulho doce", and São Martinho tarts. Linen items, woolen blankets, and basketry represent the region's handicrafts.
