Vila Nova de Cerveira

Vila Nova de Cerveira is strongly influenced by the Minho River, which delimits the entire municipality and provides magnificent views to those who pass by. The best places to get them are Monte da Pena and Serra d'Arga. The region has been inhabited since Prehistory and, in places such as Gondarém, Lovelhe or Covas, hillforts and other manifestations of human activity remain. In 1320, King Dinis ordered the town to be surrounded with walls and, the following year, he granted it a charter. In 1896 the municipality of Cerveira was extinguished and after two years its status was restored again. Currently, the municipality invests heavily in tourism and culture. The village known as "Vila das Artes" hosts the renowned International Art Biennial and has a Museum of Contemporary Art.
