Fortaleza de Sagres

Fortress that dates back to the 16th Century but which has suffered a number of alterations throughout the ages. This fortress maintains a strong defensive wall with battlements and a tower, it also conserves a corridor that continues underneath the old tower's vaulted ceiling. In 1960 the fortess was restored but the restoration process took away some of the character of the place and replaced it with a false authenticity. In the beginning of the 20th century a wind rose thought to be contemporary to Dom Henrique was discovered, it was etched onto the pavement stone slabs. In the Sagres Fortress, besides being able to enjoy the cultural heritage and the magnificent view to the inlet of Marete and Cape St Vincent, you can also visit what remains of Vila do Infante, the remains of the old residences and the barracks and also the old church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace).
