Carrazeda de Ansiães

The municipality of Carrazeda de Ansiães presents two distinct realities, although it is part of Terra Quente Transmontana. To the North, the plateau zone refers to the wilder Terra Fria, with predominance of granite, vines and cereals. To the South, towards the Douro and Tua rivers, the temperature rises and the landscape changes, giving way to the embedded valleys of river courses where the shale, the vine, the olive tree and the almond tree are predominant. Its people is especially dedicated to the campesina (peasants) agriculture without great pretensions, although the port and table wine, the apple and olive oil production show a more organized exploitation with high-quality end products. The little existing industry is essentially linked to agrifood and the tourism sector is gaining importance, in particular because it is partially included in the Douro Vinhateiro – Património da Humanidade. The history of the county is long and there are numerous traces to prove it. There are several examples of tapirs, engravings and carvings, as well as national monuments with Romanesque and medieval outlines, in the municipality. The gastronomy of Carrazeda de Ansiães is based on the excellent wines aged in oak or nut trees barrels, honey, smoked meats, river fish, game dishes and sweets made of almonds. Note also the handicrafts still present in the municipality, like the sacred art wood carvings, which captures the attention on a national level, the manufacture of chestnut baskets, a disappearing art, and the chestnut tree cooperage, a rare art Carrazeda de Ansiães municipality is proud to possess.
