Carregal do Sal

Between the Estrela and Caramulo mountains, and bordered by the Dão and Mondego rivers, the municipality of Carregal do Sal, as we know it today, was created in 1836. While Carregal was the name of a place in Currelos, "do Sal" derives from the fact that, in the 18th century, large salt mines were built there, serving for almost two centuries as a storage facility for salt transported by boat from Figueira da Foz. In terms of crafts, the wrought iron and carved work, tinwork, and tile painting are noteworthy. Gastronomically, it also carries the weight of tradition: roast kid goat "à la" suckling pig, rabbit "à la" Capitão-Mor, lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven, and eels "à la" piano are the most typical dishes, which should be duly complemented with the fine wine of the demarcated Dão region.
