Crato

Belonging to the district of Portalegre, the municipality of Crato is located in Alto Alentejo and is characterized for being picturesque and full of history. The over seventy dolmens, the bridges and Roman villas, the Castle, the proven presence of the order of Malta and of D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, the noble houses, the pompous Baroque-era copies and other attractions make this site into a good choice for paying a visit. The rurality is a characteristic of the municipality. Agriculture is the main economic engine of the region, but the cork extraction and tourism are of evident importance alongside the activities related to crafts and gastronomy, such as the Feira de Artesanato e Gastronomia do Crato (Handicraft and Gastronomy Fair of Crato), which takes place in the last week of August and that comprises a number of attractions. The pottery, in addition to being a source of income for some people, is the activity that promotes Crato. Regional dolls, wooden works (sacred art, chairs and owls), cork items and stonework (fireplaces, sculptures and masonry) continue to inspire artisans and to symbolize the region. The ground is fertile in flavors that enrich the local gastronomy. The migas de batata (dish made with leftover bread and potatoes), o borrego (lamb), a alhada de cação (boiled dogfish with garlic and vinegar) and the sopa de sarapatel (kind of soup made with lamb offal and blood, and served with bread and oranges) are great examples. The confectionery is represented by the regional sweets, such as the "teculameca" (kind of cake made with eggs and almonds), the Bolo da Sogra and the Barrigas de Freira (sweet porridge made with bread crumbs and almonds). The perfect combination of these delicacies is done with the wines of Portalegre region.
