Convento de Mértola

Convent built in the 17th century, being situated in a rocky elevation. This location has views of the village and to the Guadiana river. With the extinction of the religious orders in the 19TH century 30 space is voted to the abandonment by the authorities. In the late ' 70 of last century the convent is purchased by individuals that turn into his residence, the Church having been reserved for concerts, exhibitions and other cultural initiatives. Currently, the convent of St. Francis is a cultural center of great importance for the village of Mértola.

Located at the Angeja-Palmela palace, this museum integrates collections of civil clothes from the XIV to the XX centuries, popular clothes, opera dresses, accessories, toys from the XIX and XX centuries, among other curiosities. In order to maintain the conservation of its collections it has temporary exhibitions of the 35 thousand pieces it owns, organizing thematic shows. The permanent exhibition is about the textile technology. The museum has also a library specialized in the clothing history.

The São João Baptista fort, next to the recreational port of Machico, was built by order of the Governor of Madeira, Captain-General Duarte Sodré Pereira, in 1708. It is also called Forte do Desembarcadouro because the discoverers disembarked nearby the island, Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. It defended the bay of Machico, doing crossfire with the fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo. Inside there is a neo-Gothic chapel, dedicated to the saint after whom the fortress is named.

Planned by the architect Carlos Amarante, this church was built along the XIX century, by initiative of the Ordem da Trindade, at the Largo do Laranjal. The façade is classical and the walls are filled with neo classical retables. It stands out, in the principal chapel, a big panel representing the Baptism of Christ, by the painter José de Brito. The religious order also has several painting works, such as the Resende’s portraits and several copies of Italian painters, such as Rafael, Ticiano and Caravaggio.
