At the highest point of the city, at 1056 meters of altitude, is the Castelo da Guarda, better known as Torre de Menagem. The town was inhabited by order of Dom Sancho I, who granted it a charter and privileges in 1199, and transferred the seat of the diocese to here. This first charter was confirmed by the same king in 1217, 1229 and, later, in 1254, by Dom Afonso III. In 1510, Dom Manuel granted it a new charter and granted his son, Dom Fernando, the title of Duke of Guarda.

The construction of this convent started in the 15th century and was founded by Dona Francisca de Azambuja, a descendant of one of the most ilustrious families in Barreiro. Its architecture is simple and austere. It went through several works, namely at the beginning of the 18th century. When the religious orders were extinguished it became a farm for the summer vacations. In 1995, the building, that belonged to the town hall, as recovered and restored. It currently has an auditorium, a section of the municipal library, a bar and a centre of temporary exhibitions.

All the three villages that make up the Parish has served as headquarters: in all prayed and mass rose baptistery able. Half of St. Peter, village founded on a castro where still, belonged to the order of Saint James of Mourilhe. However, the most idyllic corner of the whole plateau is perhaps the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vila April that was medieval Hermitage loaded of religiosity and legends. The first museum created in the Algarve, in 1874, is located in the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Deactivated in 1834, after the extinction of religious orders, the convent was used as a cork factory during the 20th century. Later, in 1960, the works of adaptation to a museum began. It presents permanent exhibitions of Archeology (Roman and Islamic periods), Religious Painting from the 16th to the 19th century and Painting from the 20th century, as well as temporary exhibitions of the most varied themes.

Held by the current owner's family for over two centuries, this home is perched on the hillside West of the Highland of Aboboreira, offering fantastic views. Having undergone some changes in 1864 and in 1909, in order to preserve the structure, has currently a capacity for six people. Is equipped with a stove with oven, refrigerator, microwave, kitchen utensils, bed linen and towels. As the land belongs to the demarcated area of the vinho Verde, can observe the cultivation of vine of hanged on trellised vines and bards.

The Monastery of Leça do Balio, already existing in the 10th century, was profoundly altered in the 14th century under the direction of Estêvão Vasques Pimentel. From the 16th century, several interventions by Diogo Pires, the “Moço” stand out. The monastery church, restored in 1930, is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Portugal. In this church took place the marriage of King Dom Fernando and Dona Leonor Teles. It was also the first headquarters of the Military Order of the Hospital.

The Adega do Ermitão, in Guimarães, for 40 years under the management of Armindo Monteiro, Guimarães, yolk the Hermit's cellar is a rustic place, very simple, where you expect in line to order and take to the table snacks involved in bakery paper. In this House serve various dishes of fish and meat grilled on charcoal and the menu is filled with more than 90 suggestions. Other options very ordered are the paella, the grouper and the grouper baked in the oven, cataplana, rice with seafood, meat cutting board with seafood and fruit, mixed seafood, beef Sirloin steak, pork loin and black fangs of wild boar. In desserts, the chocolate cake with profiteroles or the sweet of the House with two flavors pudding washed down with strawberry sauce.

It is believed that this castle was built before the establishment of the nation, during the reign of Alfonso IX of León. Later, King Dinis recovered much of that region, ordering restoration and expansion works on its fortresses. King Manuel I granted a new charter to the town, leading to further restoration works. Currently, two square towers remain, one of the entrance gates bearing the royal crown and the coat of arms of King Manuel. Nothing remains of the wall that surrounded the town.

A castle of Muslim construction whose occupation dates back to the 6th century BC. Definitely conquered by the Portuguese crown in 1217, it lost its military function in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the Carmelite Order of Aracoelli founded its convent there, remaining until 1834. Currently, it is possible to observe ruins of the castle, the Aracoelli convent, the 13th-century church of Santa Maria, remains of the town and various dwellings, and the Archaeological Crypt on the lower floor of the Pousada (inn).
