This is one of the most beautiful Portuguese Romanesque monuments, with an external appearance resembling a fortified church. The current construction began in 1162, during the reign of King Afonso Henriques. It served as the Episcopal See until 1772 and subsequently belonged to the Misericórdia (a charitable institution) until 1778. There were previously 36 metal frame mills in the municipality of Cadaval, which reflects the importance of cereal production. This mill is one of the remaining ones, now serving, after being deactivated in 1995 and purchased by the City Council, as cultural and educational equipment, covering the municipality's mills, the work of the millers and the bread cycle in an educational way.

Planed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira to the Expo 98, the building is inspired in the Portuguese architecture typologies.
