Ermida dos Navegantes à Estrela

This monument, dated from 1757, was built by the Brotherhood of the Senhor Jesus dos Navegantes and Nossa Senhora da Caridade, from the Esperança Convent. The remarkable glazed tile covering with a consistent iconographical program and the interesting views of the XVIII century Lisbon are worthy of notice.

This temple was reconstructed on the 17th century and it still conserves some fifteen hundreds elements and others posteriors to 1755. The interior is covered with a cradle vault. It is worth to mention the two holly water fonts from the 16th century and the glazed tiles from the 17th century.

From the primitive church it has only kept the decorative elements existing on the behead modillions. The present façade and the bell ringer tower were built on the second half of the 16th century. The defensive tower placed next to the church is from the end of the Middle age.

This temple has one only nave to which it opens four lateral chapels. The main chapel, with the walls covered by glazed tiles panels from the sixteen hundreds, possesses a carved altarpiece from the 17th century. It is also worthy to mention the baptism chapel.

The façade displays some traces from a Romanic doorway which panels are ornate by two pigeons. The inside has one only nave standing out the baptismal font that has it origins on the fifteen hundreds period, the pulpit and the image from Santa Maria.

Placed at the residence/atelier of José Malhoa, this house-museum, art-nouveau style, owes its name to Anastácio Gonçalves, famous Portuguese art collector from the meadle of the XX century. It exhibits a collection of Portuguese paintings from the XIX and XX centuries that includes, namely, works of Columbano, Malhoa and Silva Porto. Also in exhibition are chinese porcelains from the XVII and XVIII centuries, furniture and ceramics, among other collection.
