The Museum of Vila Velha is a new cultural equipment of Vila Real, housed in a building designed by the architect António Belém Lima, and aims to make known the fruits of archaeological excavations in Vila Velha, allowing an increasingly profound knowledge of occupation of this territory. The visitor can contact closely with the results of the interventions, but also with associated archaeological practices. On the lower level, offers an area dedicated to temporary exhibitions, diverse themed. On the top floor, an area for holding exhibitions of average duration. There is also an auditorium with capacity for 60 people.

When it was created, in 1945, it was called “Museu de Etnografia e História do Douro Litoral”. Since that time it is placed at the Plácio de São João Novo, dated from the XVIII century. This monument has been suffering a huge degradation, being, in 1989, under the guardianship of the IPPC and, in 1991, of the IPM. Closed to the public since 1992, the IPM has being transferring its collections to various museums. Works in the façade and the coverings of the palace have being made and, after the inventory systematization, the intension is to solve the problem definitively.

Megalithic monuments consisting of two menhirs situated relatively close to each other. It is a monolith carved from a block of greywacke, dark gray in color, with a brown patinated surface. It has a star-like appearance, an ellipsoidal cross-section, and measures a little over three meters in height, making it the largest example of greywacke known to date in Portugal. Everything indicates that these menhirs were built in the second half of the fourth millennium BC. The site is surrounded by a net, so it can only be visited from the outside.
