It is believed that this castle was built before the establishment of the nation, during the reign of Alfonso IX of León. Later, King Dinis recovered much of that region, ordering restoration and expansion works on its fortresses. King Manuel I granted a new charter to the town, leading to further restoration works. Currently, two square towers remain, one of the entrance gates bearing the royal crown and the coat of arms of King Manuel. Nothing remains of the wall that surrounded the town.

Vila Real

A church with one only nave and a rectangular high chapel. The main façade has an ogival arch portal and an archivolt ornamented by vegetable elements that stands on corbels. Above the main portal there is a pannelled small window. The gable is topped by a campanile with a bell. Inside, a special note to the ogival triumphal arch and to the tombs of Álvaro Lopes and Senha de martin Vaz de Sampaio, of the 16th and 17th centuries.

This church was founded on the 12th century and it underwent several transformations due to its continuous reconstruction work. It is composed by three naves and main chapel, two sacristies, main chapel, two lateral chapels and bell tower. Presently it displays a Manueline physiognomy. On the inside it is worthy to mention the altars, the altarpiece in gold carving, the statuary, and the scenes representing São João Baptista life on the central nave.

This church is also known as São Luís Church, together with the monastery it was founded in 1596 by Luís de Figueiredo Falcão and used to belong to the Clarisse orders. It has some elements from the sixteen hundreds and from the eighteen hundreds. From the first period, it stands out the only nave, the ceiling and the main chapel coverage; from the second period stands out the doorway, the windows and the main elevation.
