These gates represent the main entrance to Ponta Delgada and are the true landmark of the city. Azenha do Mar originated from the commercial harvesting of red algae that grows on the southwest coast of Portugal, known scientifically as Gelidium sesquipedale. This is one of the most important Marian Shrines in Portugal.
