The Convent of San Payo was founded by the Franciscan friar, Gonçalo Marinho, in 1932. After several adversities (the extinction of religious orders and a devastating fire), the convent was abandoned and fell into a state of complete degradation, with its assets disappearing, some looted and others transferred to chapels and churches in the municipality.
